The Blue Topaz Drop Necklace from House Of The 18th is a sterling silver pendant necklace featuring a single 4x6mm pear-cut blue topaz set in an irregular, hand-formed bezel. The pendant hangs from a fine cable chain measuring 40cm with a 5cm extender, allowing the length to be adjusted between 40cm and 45cm. Both pendant and chain are solid 925 sterling silver finished with 18ct gold plating. The necklace is nickel-free and suitable for sensitive skin.

What is blue topaz?

Topaz is an aluminium silicate mineral rating 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it one of the harder gemstones used in jewellery and well suited to daily wear. Blue topaz is produced by treating colourless topaz, and ranges from pale sky blue through to deeper London blue. The stone in this necklace is a light sky blue, cut as a faceted pear to catch light from the point upward.

Why the bezel is irregular

The setting is not a uniform machine-cut bezel. The gold is formed to wrap the stone unevenly, so the metal reads as poured rather than fabricated. The effect is that a small stone still holds attention - the frame does as much work as the topaz.

How to care for 18ct gold-plated sterling silver

Gold-plated sterling silver jewellery lasts longest when kept away from perfume, hairspray, chlorine and prolonged water contact. Put the necklace on last when dressing and remove it before showering or swimming. Store flat and dry in a soft pouch to prevent the chain from knotting. Clean with a dry soft cloth only — polishing cloths and silver dips remove gold plating.
