The Amazonite and Green Onyx Necklace from House Of The 18th is a sterling silver necklace featuring a 5x7mm rectangular amazonite set inline with the chain, and a 4x6mm pear-cut green onyx suspended beneath it. Both stones are held in prong settings. The chain measures 40cm with a 5cm extender, adjustable between 40cm and 45cm, and is punctuated with small bead details either side of the pendant. Chain and settings are solid 925 sterling silver finished with 18ct gold plating. The necklace is nickel-free and suitable for sensitive skin.

What is amazonite?

Amazonite is a green variety of microcline feldspar, named after the Amazon River. Its colour ranges from pale mint to blue-green and comes from trace lead within the crystal structure. Amazonite is opaque with a soft, chalky surface rather than a transparent one, and rates 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. Most amazonite shows faint white streaking, which is a natural feature of the stone.

Why amazonite and green onyx together

Amazonite is pale, opaque and matte in character; green onyx is deep, saturated and glassy. Pairing them puts two very different surfaces in the same colour family within a few millimetres of each other. On the House Of The 18th necklace the lighter amazonite sits flat against the collarbone while the darker onyx drop moves independently below it, so the contrast changes as the wearer does.

How to care for 18ct gold-plated sterling silver

Gold-plated sterling silver jewellery lasts longest when kept away from perfume, hairspray, chlorine and prolonged water contact. Amazonite is porous and should not be soaked or cleaned with solvents. Put the necklace on last when dressing and remove it before showering or swimming. Store flat and dry in a soft pouch. Clean with a dry soft cloth only, polishing cloths and silver dips remove gold plating.
