Citrine this gold almost never started that way.

Labradorite never needed the help.

What this ring is

This ring sets a row of carnelian, citrine, and labradorite along a slim, beaded-texture band of 18ct gold-plated 925 sterling silver, prong-set in EU size 19. House Of The 18th arranged three stones with three different colour stories — one warmed by treatment, one built from a different mineral entirely, and one that changes colour without any help at all — on the same delicate row.

What is carnelian?

Carnelian is a red-orange variety of chalcedony, its colour coming from iron oxide impurities in the stone. Much of the carnelian sold today, including deeper, more saturated stones like this one, is heat-treated to intensify a naturally occurring colour rather than to create one from scratch. It rates 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale.

What is citrine, and is it natural?

Citrine is a golden variety of quartz, but natural citrine is genuinely rare — the vast majority sold commercially, including most jewellery-grade citrine, is heat-treated amethyst or smoky quartz, heated until the colour shifts from purple or brown to gold. Citrine rates 7 on the Mohs scale, regardless of which quartz it started as.

What is labradorite?

Labradorite is a feldspar mineral known for labradorescence: a blue-and-gold flash that appears and disappears as the stone catches the light, caused by internal layering in the crystal structure rather than any dye or coating. It's one of the few stones in this ring that reached its finished look without any treatment at all, and rates 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale.

Why run warm to cool across one band?

Carnelian's red-orange and citrine's gold sit on the warm end of the palette; labradorite's grey-with-blue-flash sits on the cool end. House Of The 18th set them in a single row rather than three separate rings because the point isn't matching — it's contrast that still reads as one piece.

How to care for carnelian, citrine, and labradorite

All three stones are hard enough for daily wear, but should still come off before swimming or heavy manual work to protect the gold plating around the prongs. Clean with a soft, dry cloth, and store away from harder stones that could scratch the labradorite's polished surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the citrine in this ring natural? Most commercial citrine, including the stone in this ring, is heat-treated amethyst or smoky quartz rather than naturally occurring golden quartz, since untreated citrine is rare in the jewellery trade.

Is the carnelian treated? Carnelian's warm colour often comes from heat treatment applied to naturally occurring chalcedony to deepen an already-present red-orange tone, a standard and widely used practice.

What causes labradorite's blue flash? Labradorite's flash, called labradorescence, comes from light reflecting between internal layers within the crystal itself, not from any coating or treatment applied to the stone.

What does 18ct gold-plated mean? 18ct gold-plated means a thin layer of 18-carat gold is applied over the 925 sterling silver base, describing the gold's purity rather than the plating's thickness.

Can this ring be stacked? Yes, the slim beaded band is designed as a stacking ring and sits well alongside other pieces from the collection.
