This ring sets a single 3mm faceted, round-cut blue topaz in a decorative crown-style gallery — a scalloped setting that lifts and frames the stone — on a slim, plain band of 18ct gold-plated 925 sterling silver, EU size 17.8. House Of The 18th kept the band bare so the crown setting and the stone are the only things doing the talking.
What is blue topaz?
Topaz is an aluminium silicate mineral that occurs naturally colourless. This stone's blue comes from irradiation followed by heat treatment, the standard process behind nearly all blue topaz sold today. It rates 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, among the more durable stones House Of The 18th works with.
Why a crown setting instead of a plain prong?
A plain prong holds a stone up. A crown setting lifts it and frames it from underneath, so light enters from more angles. House Of The 18th used it here because a single stone, worn alone, has to do more work than one stone in a row of three — the setting is part of what makes it worth looking at.
How to care for blue topaz
Topaz is hard enough for daily wear, but should still come off before contact sports or heavy manual work, and cleaned with a soft cloth rather than harsh chemicals, which can dull the gold plating around the crown setting.
How long the gold plating lasts
Gold plating is a finish, not a material. With daily wear it typically holds for one to two years before it begins to show thinning at high-contact points — the underside of a band, the back of a pendant — and considerably longer on pieces that come off before water, perfume and sleep. The 925 sterling silver underneath does not wear out, and the plating can be renewed by a jeweller.
