One of these greens grew that way. The other one had help.

We'll tell you which.

What this ring is

The Peridot and Green Onyx Ring from House Of 18th Jewellery sets small peridot and green onyx stones, 1.5mm to 2mm each, individually by hand along a textured band of 925 sterling silver plated in 18ct gold. It is sized EU 58 (18.5mm inner diameter) and supplied as a single piece. The peridot reads bright and glassy, the green onyx darker and steadier, so the band shows two depths of the same colour.

What is peridot?

Peridot is the gem variety of olivine, a magnesium iron silicate that rates 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. Peridot only occurs in green, because the colour comes from iron built into the crystal itself rather than from trace impurities. Peridot is one of the few coloured gemstones sold essentially untreated, so its green is the colour it formed with.

What is green onyx, and is it dyed?

Green onyx in the jewellery trade is almost always chalcedony, a microcrystalline quartz, dyed to an even green, because chalcedony rarely grows in that colour on its own. Assume the green onyx in this ring is dyed. It rates 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, about the same as the peridot beside it.

Why mix a treated stone with an untreated one

Peridot needs nothing to be green. Green onyx needs dye. House Of 18th Jewellery set them on the same band and says so, because a ring that lets you assume every stone is equally natural is hiding something about one of them.

How to care for peridot, green onyx and gold plating

Take the ring off before showering, swimming, washing up or putting on hand cream. Peridot is sensitive to acids and sudden temperature change, so never use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner, and do not soak dyed stones or clean them with solvents. Wipe with a soft dry cloth only, because polishing cloths and silver dips remove gold plating. Store it on its own in a soft pouch.

How long the gold plating lasts

Gold plating is a finish, not a material. With daily wear it typically holds for one to two years before it begins to show thinning at high-contact points — the underside of a band, the back of a pendant — and considerably longer on pieces that come off before water, perfume and sleep. The 925 sterling silver underneath does not wear out, and the plating can be renewed by a jeweller.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the peridot in this ring natural? Yes, peridot is a natural gemstone and is sold essentially untreated, so its green is the colour the stone formed with.

Is green onyx dyed? Green onyx sold in jewellery is almost always chalcedony dyed green, and the green onyx in this ring should be treated as dyed.

What does 18ct gold-plated mean? 18ct gold-plated means a layer of 18-carat gold is bonded over 925 sterling silver, and "18ct" describes the purity of the gold plating, not the weight of the stones.

How durable is this ring for daily wear? Both stones rate 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, so they handle everyday wear, but the gold plating wears first and lasts longest when the ring comes off before water and hand cream.

Can this ring be stacked with other rings? Yes, the textured band is made to be worn alone or stacked with other House Of 18th Jewellery rings.
